Saturday, June 22nd- We got up on Saturday to
enjoy one more breakfast with friends before we headed out on our trip.
We drove out of Buena Vista, CO and headed north on 24 up through Leadville to get to Grand Lake, CO- our next stop. We had quite a scenic route up there. The mountains are beautiful. I don’t talk much about my truck, but WOW… we were really happy we had it pulling up and down those mountains. The Ford has a tow/ haul mode that allows you to lock in your cruise control- then it downshifts to keep the truck and trailer at speed on those descents! That was a lifesaver on the road. When we left Leadville, we had about a 2000-foot descent in about 2 miles- it was about a 7% grade. That might not sound like much in a car, but pulling a 10K trailer- it is high-adventure. We had a great trip up to Grand Lake. We even found a Chipotle in Silverthorne, CO to grab some lunch at.

We stayed in Grand Lake, CO at our friend Courtney’s parents
place. IT was a great break there. We
had the chance to do some hiking, go to church with them, and even catch up on
some laundry. J We got to take a look at some of the damage
that the beetles have done to the forests there in the area. The beetles killed a lot of trees starting
in the Buena Vista area and gradually increased in destruction as we headed
north. It was sad to see, but the
mountains are still beautiful.
We took a look at the log cabins in the area. There are a lot of them made from lodge-pole
pine logs that are skinned and fit tightly together. They look great. I talked with Dan about how he built his
cabins. He said that he tightly fits the
logs together by shaving the logs to the right shape, then hi drills and drives
long spikes down through the logs every 2’ to hold them firmly together. He adds some caulking in between the logs,
but they are really tight- even without the caulk. The cabins look great, but they are a
completely different kind of building construction than I have done before. It is a very time consuming and challenging
process compared to building with plywood and 2”x4”s- that’s for sure. The finished cabins are great though.
